Remove Shine without Removing Make-up

pr-shiny_nose

You know those little packages of facial blotting papers? Pretty neat, huh? Problem is, I usually end up using about TEN because they’re so small. The seat protectors in public restrooms are made from a very similar material and do a wonderful job of removing the shine without removing your make-up!

This is a great trick since most offices and restaurants (basically anywhere you might have a meeting) have them and it only takes a minute to remove the shine!

Weekly Meeting Summary Sheet

Weekly Meeting Template

I’ve always been a pretty independent worker and consider myself sooo fortunate that all of my managers have not been micro-managers. But I know it’s important that I keep them up updated with my workload and projects. Sometimes we meet face-to-face once during the week, other times I just print the document and leave it on her desk. We try to meet once a week, but it doesn’t always work out that way ;-)

If you don’t meet with your manager regularly, this is also a good document for tracking your work load. I save each week by date (MMDDYY) so I can reference it later.

This is a forth or fifth generation document (the original was created by my co-worker and very good friend, JCo!) and with each revision it gets slightly better.

Here’s how the document works: (more…)

Tea Party Etiquette

Tea Party Etiquette

Want to know a secret? For over a year now, I’ve been a princess on the weekends. I dress up for children’s birthday parties (between 1-3 parties most weekends) for a local company to earn some extra cash. Of course, I’m not always a princess. Sometimes I’m a pop star or a clown (my least favorite). Sometimes I assist the “head” characters (your purple dinosaurs, blue monsters and explorer girls) and just do face painting and games. One day, I’ll share all the tips I have for children’s birthday parties. Today, I’m going to share a mini-lesson I gave at the last party I did. The mom was having a princess tea party and wanted me to give a tea party etiquette lesson.

Here’s the lesson I gave:

First, ask the girls if they knew what “Tea Party Etiquette” is. Listen to their answers and explain that “Tea Party Etiquette” is how princesses act during a princess tea party.

Here is some tea party etiquette (from easiest to hardest): (more…)

Closet Storage Solution

Closet Storage Solution

This ClosetMaid 8-cube Laminate Organizer has worked out really well in the top space in the closet. I turned it on its side and it fits just about perfectly (there is only about 2 inches above it)! Chris uses it to store his snowboard jackets, thermals, and miscellaneous equipment. One of the cubbies has my scarves and mittens and our extra sheets are in another one. It makes really good use of the space above in the closet.

I bought mine at Target about a year ago. I think they still have them in-store, but I can’t find it online.

Lessons Learned: the Worst Business Trip Ever

Worst Business Trip Ever

I was supposed to be in Tempe from Tuesday through Thursday last week. My return flight was scheduled to depart Phoenix at 5:40pm on Thursday. Then came the high winds and with it the shutting down of SAN for 2 hours, and then PHX for 2 hours. What came after that was a long effort to get back home.

I was with my boss, my boss’ boss and a project director. Our journey home lasted 26 hours, started with a cancelled flight and included: renting a car and trying to drive home (closed freeway), booking 4 tickets on another airline (that flight was later cancelled), staying another night in a hotel room (that was the only one that still had vacancy and was 14 miles from the airport), trying to rent a car to get to California (the first rental place doesn’t do one-ways to CA), and finally getting a rental car and driving home.

Not everything here will be applicable for future trips, but hopefully bits of it will prove useful eventually! (more…)

Packing for a Business Trip

Packing for a Business Trip

I’m in lovely Tempe, AZ until Thursday (1/21). It’s raining and I miss home. I don’t like flying or traveling (unless I’m on vacation!) because I get all kinds of sick: air sick, car sick, home sick… it’s okay though. I like my job a lot so I don’t mind traveling for it.

Since I was going to have 3 days in the office and 2 after-work (causal) events and 1 potential business dinner, I needed a variety of outfits. Continue reading for my plan…

Acai Smoothies

We are obsessed with acai smoothies right now. So much so, that we buy the ingredients from CostCo in bulk! These tasty treats are easy to make and really yummy…

Acai Smoothies

1 cup Acai juice
1 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
2 cups frozen berries (blueberries and/or raspberries are good)

Put all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth. Enjoy!

Emergency Car Kit from Dad

Emergency Car Kit from Dad

This is such a “dad” gift! My dad put together a kit when I got my car. I think he purchased the case with some items (jumper cables, tow kit, poncho/first aid kit, gloves, cones) in it, and then added some things (flashlight, tools, camera, fix-a-flat). I’ve used it many, many times.

Emergency Car Kit from Dad

In fact, I used it yesterday when I went to Target to pick up some things. When I walked out to my car to leave, there was a man and his son standing near the car that was nose-to-nose with my car. The dad was putting the hood up and I asked him if he needed a jump. He was really nice and really appreciative and used the opportunity to teach his son how to jump a car.

Keep reading to find out what shocking thing the son said about me! (more…)

Magazine Subscriptions

Real Simple Magazine - a gift with a twist

I happen to think that magazine subscriptions make great gifts – even if they sometimes pile up, I always get to them eventually. An especially nice touch is something my mom has done for years. In the “name” field, she puts something cute like “I LOVE JEANNIE” and that small detail makes me so happy! Every time my magazine comes, I glance at the label (to make sure it still has the message from my mom there, I guess!) and it makes me smile.

A little bit of happy

She’s done this for retiring colleagues – but in the name field puts something funny like “OLD FART” or “RETIRE E” and gets hobby magazines like fishing or golf. The first Christmas that Chris and I were together, I got his roommates each a magazine subscription and sent them to “SEXY GRAHAM” and “BIGDADDY BRET” – it was pretty popular!

An added bonus… when subscription lists are sold, even more mail starts coming to “I LOVE JEANNIE”!

Create an Email list from Excel

Make an email list from excel

This trick is so handy if you have a table with contacts, or if you’ve exported contacts from Outlook into a table, and you would like to create a block of email addresses separated by semicolons that you can copy-and-paste into the “TO” field of an email. The example I have here only has a few emails (of my favorite female sitcom characters), but you can follow the same steps for a lot more email addresses!

Here’s an example of what you might have in Excel:
